How to See the Lights

A self-guided walking route from Lincolnville

You don’t need a trolley pass. The core lighting heart of St. Augustine is walkable from this porch in under fifteen minutes — here is the route most guests take.

  1. 01

    Cordova Street, heading north

Leave the front porch at dusk. Cordova Street is residential and oak-shaded for the first six blocks — the warm-up walk before the lights begin. Stop at Southern Charm Bake Shoppe (block two) for hot chocolate to-go.

  2. 02

    Plaza de la Constitución

The lighting heart. Tens of thousands of lights wrap every tree, the gazebo, the perimeter benches. Best photo spot is the southwest corner, looking toward the cathedral.

  3. 03

    Bridge of Lions & bayfront

Walk east to the bayfront. The Bridge of Lions is fully wrapped — cross halfway for the postcard view back at the Castillo skyline.

  4. 04

    Castillo de San Marcos grounds

Walk north along the seawall. The 17th-century Spanish fort is dramatic against the lighted backdrop. Free entry to the grounds; the fort itself closes at dusk.

  5. 05

St. George Street, the slow walk back

Loop back through the pedestrian shopping street. Most shops stay open until 9pm during the season. Stop for late dinner at Catch 27 or the Floridian on the way home.

Total walking: roughly two miles. Print map and recommendations are on the kitchen counter when you arrive.

Insider Tip

The best night to see the lights is Tuesday

Weekend crowds peak Friday and Saturday — thirty-minute trolley waits, elbow contact on St. George Street, and impossible dinner reservations. Mid-week is the same lights, half the people.

Tuesday-Thursday after 7pm

Locals call this the “quiet glow” window. Same lights, restaurants seat walk-ins, photo spots are unblocked.

Sunday after 9pm

Weekend crowds clear by 9pm Sunday. A quiet, almost-empty city under the lights.

Avoid: Friday & Saturday after 5pm

Peak crowds, peak waits, peak parking pain. Worth it once for the energy — but pick mid-week for the actual visit.

Worth showing up: opening Saturday

The November 21 lighting ceremony is the magical first-night moment. Crowded but worth one viewing in your lifetime.

Nights of Lights Questions

Holiday season FAQs.

When does Nights of Lights run in 2026?

St. Augustine Nights of Lights traditionally runs from mid-November through late January. The 2026-2027 season is expected to begin Saturday, November 21, 2026 (lighting ceremony) and run through Sunday, January 31, 2027. Confirm exact dates on the official Visit St. Augustine site closer to the season.

Why stay in Lincolnville during Nights of Lights?

Two reasons. First: walkability. The Plaza de la Constitución, where most lighting clusters, is twelve minutes on foot from our porch — no $25 parking, no shuttle, no traffic. Second: quiet. Hotels on Avenida Menendez are loud until 11pm. Lincolnville is residential. You walk to the lights, then come home to silence.

How early should I book for the holiday season?

The Nights of Lights season is the busiest time of year in St. Augustine. Most weekends sell out 4-6 months in advance. We typically reach 90% occupancy for December weekends by August. If you're targeting Thanksgiving week, the Christmas/New Year corridor, or any Saturday in December, book direct now — direct bookings save 15-20% versus Airbnb at the same dates.

Is parking a problem during Nights of Lights?

It is for hotel guests and people staying outside Lincolnville. The historic district fills up by 4pm most evenings, and street parking near the Plaza is metered until midnight. Our property has free parking for three vehicles in the driveway, so you keep your car at the house and walk to the lights.

What is the best night to see the lights?

Tuesday or Wednesday after 7pm. Weekend crowds peak Friday and Saturday — you'll wait 30-45 minutes for the trolley and elbow people on St. George Street. Mid-week is the same lights, half the crowds. The lighting ceremony on opening Saturday is also worth seeing once if you're already in town.

Can I see the lights without taking a trolley tour?

Absolutely. The lights are free to walk under. The trolley tour adds historical narration and a route through neighborhoods you wouldn't reach on foot, but the core experience — Plaza de la Constitución, Bridge of Lions, Cathedral, Castillo grounds — is all walkable from Lincolnville. We leave a self-guided map on the counter.

Are there special events during Nights of Lights?

Yes. The British Night Watch Parade (early December), Grand Illumination ceremony (opening night), Regatta of Lights on the bayfront (mid-December), and First Night fireworks (December 31). Dates shift annually — book the property first, lock in event tickets second.
